Batavia Police Department Entry Level Patrol Officer Opportunity

The Batavia Board of Fire & Police Commissioners is accepting applications for the position of police officer with the Batavia Police Department.

Salary range: $82,874 (starting salary) to $114,267 (after 6 years).  For full-time Officers Certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB):  Upon completion of the Field Training program, officers will be placed in the wage schedule based on their years of qualified previous experience, up to the maximum at 6 years.  The salary listed reflects wage rates in accordance with the terms of the 2023 contract.

Yearly Uniform Allowance: $950 

Vacation: Two weeks after 1 year, 3 weeks after 5 years, 4 weeks after 10 years, 5 weeks after 20 years.

Sick Days: 12 paid sick days per year.

Personal Days: 2 paid personal days per year. 

Shifts: 8-hour shifts. 

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the City of Batavia Board of Fire & Police Commissioners:

  • U.S. citizenship;
  • No felony convictions (or any misdemeanor conviction involving moral turpitude);
  • Must be at least 21 years of age -AND- under the age of 35 at the time of application (or meet the exemption set forth in the Illinois Compiled Statutes 65 ILCS5/10-2.1-6);
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent;

*The orientation and testing process will begin promptly at 8:00 AM.  Doors to the facility will be locked at that time and admittance will NOT be granted after 8:00 AM.

Batavia Police Department Seeking Community Service Officer

The City of Batavia Police Department is seeking a full-time Community Service Officer (CSO). The Community Service Officer (CSO) is a non-sworn uniformed, unarmed civilian assigned to supplement sworn police officers in the enforcement of city ordinances and assisting the public in non-criminal related matters. Such work involves responding to non-criminal complaints, and enforcing ordinances, and other duties that do not require physical arrest and are not related to crimes in progress. 

 The following duties and qualifications are examples and not exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required as assigned.

 Enforcement of city ordinances

  • Assist the public with vehicle lockouts, animal complaints, and non-criminal related matters
  • Write tickets, take private property traffic crash reports, assist with traffic control 
  • Assist with evidence duties and police records responsibilities to include answering non-emergency telephone calls and effectively communicating with customers
  • Handle administrative tasks, and other duties not requiring a sworn officer level of training 
  • Assist with fleet management and communicates with equipment vendors
  • Perform responsibilities related to community outreach programs and police station tours
  • Provide a variety of reports, logs, and other written correspondence
  • Must be a team-player capable of working independently and exercising sound judgment 
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to learn and apply city policies and laws
  • Position requires LEADS certification/ ability to obtain certification within 6 months of starting
  • Maintain inventory of department supplies & equipment
  • Manage appointments and fingerprinting citizens 

Applicants must possess a high school (or GED) diploma; an associate degree in criminal justice or related field is desirable; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills listed above. Previous experience in law enforcement/security experience preferred. A valid Illinois driver's license is required. A typical schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00 A.M – 3:00 P.M. However other hours of work may be required as Batavia PD is a 24-hour, 7 days per week operation. Employees will be expected to work mandatory overtime as assigned. This position reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Administration.

This opportunity is for applicants who are already Illinois certified police officers.  Another entry level exam will be held in summer 2023.

The Batavia Police Department has an authorized strength of 41 sworn officers and is establishing a lateral eligibility list for our current and future openings.  

The Batavia Police Department provides policing services to over 26,000 residents within our 10-square-mile community.  The department is proactive, working aggressively and consistently to identify and resolve problems and other issues to improve the quality of life within our community. We are a community policing department, hold many public events which are intended to build relationships with the community, and we have great support from our residents.  Internally, we are a very family-friendly workplace.

Our staff includes a chief of police, two deputy chiefs, three watch commanders, four sergeants, 24 patrol officers, a community service officer, and an Investigation Unit consisting of four detectives with a supervisor, a high school resource officer, a member in the North Central Narcotics Task Force.

Batavia offers laterals the following:

  • Starting salary between $82,874 and $114,267, depending on experience and qualifications;

  • Patrol works 8-hour permanent shifts based on seniority with rotating days off every 8 weeks;
  • No residency requirement. 

Qualifications:

  • Be a municipal police officer, county sheriff’s deputy, or Illinois state trooper in good standing for at least two years.
  • Be currently certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
  • Possess substantially equivalent skills and abilities as a current Batavia Police Officer.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Candidates must be able to pass an extensive background investigation, polygraph exam, psychological exam, medical exam, and drug screening prior to getting hired.  Selected candidates may be contacted for an interview and tour of the station (spouses/significant others are welcome to join on the tour).
