The Houston Street project is the third “Streetscape project” project the City is completing to revitalize the downtown and make it more pedestrian-friendly. The Streetscape project will include wider sidewalks with areas of paver bricks, new ornamental lighting, planting beds, trees, and new storm sewers. The water main within this project area was replaced during 2014 in preparation for the Streetscape project. In certain locations, bump-outs are being installed to narrow the roadway width to provide shorter pedestrian crossings, and at other locations, the bump-outs provide for a landscape area.
The road closure will begin on Monday, August 3, and we anticipate that the street will reopen in late October or early November.
The project limits are Houston Street from North Batavia Avenue /Route 31 to Island Avenue. A construction fence will be installed around the perimeter of the work area.
Houston Street will be closed from North Batavia Avenue/Route 31 to Water Street, and from Water St. to Island Ave. An access will remain open at Water Street to allow vehicles to cross Houston Street going north or south only, although there will likely be temporary delays due to equipment maneuvering. Access will also be maintained for Island Avenue traffic to cross Houston Street and, again, there may be temporary delays. Parking on Houston Street will not be permitted during the project. Please see our downtown parking map for additional locations to park.
There will be some disruption to the neighborhood during construction. Dust, noise, and temporary road closures should be expected.
