Kane County Electronics Recycling Program

The Kane County Electronics Recycling Program has resumed and includes three daily drop-off locations throughout the county, as well as the reopening of the one-day collection events in St. Charles.  The closest site for Batavia residents is the former Kane County Jail property at 517 Fabyan Parkway, between Route 25 and Kirk Rd. on the north side of the street.  Most items are still free, but there will be a charge for TVs and computer monitors, depending on the screen size.  Please visit the Kane County Recycles webpage for information about drop off locations, upcoming monthly events, acceptable/unacceptable electronics items, and costs/payment options.

The Batavia Environmental Commission encourages Batavia Residents to mulch – not rake their leaves this fall.

As we hear the whirring of the leaf vacuum trucks around our neighborhood, there is actually an easier way to handle our fall leaves than raking and blowing them.  The latest information is that our lawns will be healthier and our backs will thank us if we mulch instead of rake.

Here are some benefits to Mulching leaves:

  • Reduces the volume of leaves dramatically and prevents leaf piles from clogging drains and causing floods.
  • Feeds soil as leaves decompose and soak into the ground.
  • Shredded leaves go to work keeping soil and roots warmer, retaining moisture, and preventing many weeds from germinating.
  • Makes lawns better able to soak up rainwater runoff.
  • Reduces pollutants from the trucks required to haul them to composting facilities.
  • Mulching leaves also reduces back and neck injuries that come with the bending, twisting and reaching motions that raking requires.

If you don’t have a mulching lawnmower, attachments are available.  If you use a lawn service consider asking them to mulch your leaves instead.
If you have too many leaves to mulch you can take the rest to the curb for city pickup.   You will save both time and effort.

Kane County 2040 Long-Range Transportation Plan Survey Available
Kane County is updating the 2040 Long-Range Transportation Plan and needs your help to identify the top priorities and areas of improvement the plan should address. The plan will become a long-term guide to improve the conditions of roadways, public transportation, bicycle and pedestrian travel, economic vitality, and help to prioritize infrastructure funding decisions. The result will lead to a higher quality of life for stakeholders in Kane County.

The County launched an interactive online survey, where participants can easily use their computer, tablet or smart phone to provide their feedback. This interactive survey takes less than 5 minutes and will play a key role in helping us to shape the future of Kane County’s Long Range Transportation Plan.

Share your vision for Kane County! You have through December 5, 2016 to take the survey in English or Spanish.
