Good News on the Siemens Front

Siemens now has their approvals from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the US EPA to begin site cleanup on the property at the southwest corner of McKee Street and VanNortwick Avenue.  Siemens will shortly be hiring a contractor to do the cleanup activities and work is expected to begin in the next month or so.  The site will have the contaminated soil material hauled off the site and disposed of in an approved special disposal facility.  They will also be treating a groundwater well in the center of the site.  This small amount of groundwater will be treated so it can meet residential development requirements; it already meets standards for non-residential development.  This groundwater has been confined to the middle of the site and poses no hazard to surrounding properties or the local aquifer.

Siemens will also be doing some additional testing on property north of McKee and in the parking lot to the west to ensure there are no other contaminated materials in those areas.  If they are found, those materials will be removed at the same time.  The McKee parking lot will also be posted for “No Parking” at that time as this is not intended for parking by the general public.

The site will then be filled with clean fill in stages, leveled off with topsoil and then seeded.  Drainage away from the existing industrial properties along Wilson will be maintained during the excavation and fill process.  Once the site is stabilized, the perimeter fence will be removed.  All of this work is planned to be complete by fall of 2016.

After the property is fully cleaned, the property will be listed for sale for future development.  The site is planned and zoned for Mixed Use development, and would no longer be used for industrial purposes.  Any questions can be directed to the Community Development Department at 630-454-2700.

KDOT Begins Summer Work in Ernest June 6 With Crack-Sealing on 5 County Roads

You know the summer roadwork season is in full swing when the Kane County Division of Transportation team announces its annual crack-sealing extravaganza.  While "extravaganza" might not be exactly the right word, the crack sealing and routing work will include some semi-high-profile county roads and might cause a few minor traffic delays, it's definitely worth noting. Starting the week of June 6, 2016, routing and crack sealing will begin on Fabyan Parkway, Thatcher Road, Hughes Road, Montgomery Road and LaFox Road. Construction work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day for about four to six weeks.

The section of County Highway Fabyan Parkway affected will be from Randall Road to Western Avenue.

The crack-sealing program is part of the county’s comprehensive road maintenance program to increase the longevity of the roads by sealing road cracks preventing water from penetrating the road base and reducing the life of the pavement. The above-mentioned road will remain open during treatment but will be reduced to one lane of travel using temporary daily lane closures. Motorists should obey flaggers, watch for construction activity, and expect delays while traveling through the work areas. Motorists may want to add additional time to their commutes and consider the use of alternate routes while this work is being completed.

Questions and concerns may be directed to David Sitko at (630) 313-0754. For all Kane County traffic advisories, see the Kane County Traffic Alerts webpage.

Kane County Suspends Electronics Recycling Program

Kane County is suspending its free electronics recycling program due to the large volume of televisions being brought to the recycling collection events, resulting in overwhelming and unmanageable attendance at the County’s April and May events in St. Charles.  The Recycling Extravaganza will still be held on Saturday, June 11, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, but electronics will not be accepted.

The County is working on solutions to the electronics recycling problem.  Please refer to the Kane County Recycles webpage for updates about the program or view a list of Alternative Electronics Recycling Locations.  Questions may be directed to Jennifer Jarland, Kane County Recycling Coordinator at 630-208-3841 or recycle@countyofkane.org
