CITY OF BATAVIA, ILLINOIS

Brush Collection Resumes in May

Brush collection will resume the week of Monday, May 9, for east side residents and the week of Monday, May 16, for west side residents. Brush should be at the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled week but no sooner than the weekend before that. For the more information about the program, including the 2016 schedule, please click here or call 630-454-2400.

Normandy Subdivision – Transformation in progress

Have you passed by the detention basin at Raddant and Edwards in the Normandy Subdivision?  You may ask why the basin is completely brown and everyone else’s grass is green?  Last fall the City converted the basin from a “turf” or green grass basin to a native planting basin.  What does that mean?  A contractor prepped the basin by killing off the turf and planting seeds for native, flowering plants.  The seed mix that was used for the basin will not start “popping” until mid-May at the earliest with a majority of the flowers not blooming until sometime mid-June.  Restoration takes time.  The City will be monitoring the basin over the next 3 growing seasons, which is typically how long it takes for native plants to fully establish.

DuPage County Trail Temporary Closure and Detour

This trail alert provides information DuPage County Trail users about a temporary trail closure and detour.  The following work is scheduled:

  • Beginning May 9, 2016, the IPP Aurora Branch will be closed at Diehl Road due to maintenance of the City of Aurora’s water tower, which is adjacent to the trail. The closure is anticipated to last six weeks.  A detour route utilizing the IPP Batavia Spur and Eola Road will be designated.

Please contact the main DOT office at 630/407-6900, if you have any questions.

Bridge Inspections

During the week of May 9th, the Fabyan Parkway over the Fox River and the Stearns Road over the Fox River bridges will be inspected, weather permitting.  Work at each bridge is anticipated to take two days. A single lane closure will be in effect. Motorists should be advised that traffic delays are possible, and should adjust their travel accordingly.

Questions and concerns may be directed to Mike Zakosek, Kane County Division of Transportation, at (630) 584-1170.  For all Kane County Traffic Advisories, see http://www.co.kane.il.us/dot/trafficalerts/Default.aspx.

Deerpath Road Bridge

Weekly updated information will be available on the project website: http://www.cityofbatavia.net/341/Deerpath-Road-Bridge-Improvements  or www.cityofbatavia.net/projects

Construction for replacement of the bridge is underway.  The contractor has displayed two changeable message boards on Main Street prior to reaching Deerpath Road that the road is closed and to alert drivers to follow the posted detour route.  A few more utilities are being relocated prior to the bridge construction fully starting.  The road closure will be for the duration of the project and as of now we are anticipating the road being closed until September 2016.  This is weather pending as well as dependent on the utility contractors.

The City appreciates your cooperation during this project. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to the Public Works Engineering project manager, Andrea Podraza either via apodraza@cityofbatavia.net or (630) 454-2757.

Next Kane County Electronics Recycling Event Is Saturday, May 14

The next Kane County Recycles Event will be held on Saturday, May 14, between 8 a.m. and 12 noon, at 540 S. Randall in St. Charles. At this event, residents can recycle electronics including televisions and books.  Please note that the list of accepted items is now limited to those electronics items that are banned from landfills; other electronics items should be put in residents’ regular trash (not recycling).  At the Electronics Recycling Events, residents can recycle up to 3 TVs per car of any type, size, or age. Large loads of TVs will not be accepted.  The monthly Electronics Recycling Events are for Kane County residents only. Businesses, institutions, schools, and non-profits may not use this event, and should instead contract for recycling services from a certified electronics recycler.

The weekday electronics drop-off sites in St. Charles and West Dundee are now closed.  Here are links to articles about the latest developments in electronics recycling and disposal: Illinois’ Electronics Recycling Struggles Affect Kane County & Where to Recycle Your Big Old TVs Today
